Senegal: the quality of the Internet for GSM termination

ejointech

The cellular market is flourishing in the Republic of Senegal, primarily due to the poor fixed-line infrastructure in rural areas. The mobile sector development has influenced the spread of Internet access services based on LTE networks. However, the mobile Internet is not suitable for VoIP termination. What is the situation with broadband access in Senegal?

The development of the Internet services sector in the Republic of Senegal has long been hampered by the poor condition of fixed-line networks and Sonatel’s monopoly on pricing of the services delivered via international fiber-optic cable. There was also little competition in the DSL segment. In 2018, new Internet providers appeared on the market, which stimulated competition and had a positive effect on tariffs.

The main players on the Internet market in Senegal are Sonatel (provides services under the Orange brand) and Arc Informatique. They offer Internet access using Fiber Optic technology, ADSL. An average Internet Bandwidth in the Republic of Senegal is 2.01 Mbps. This is a rather low value, but is the minimum allowed for the operation of equipment and gsm voip gateway software (you need to connect the Internet at a speed of at least 2 Mbps). Moreover, local providers can ensure connecting at higher speeds.

To improve the network bandwidth, you can use the SBO optimization module from GoAntiFraud. It compresses the Internet-packages by a factor of 3 without affecting the voice traffic. To use the software module, you will need Raspberry Pi3 hardware.
