The need to remotely set up routers, ip telephones and softphones arises when you have to connect remote users to an IP PBX 3CX. Thus, it is possible to combine multiple company branch offices in a single corporate VoIP network, and also to provide communication with freelancers working at home.
In order to connect devices remotely, you must do the following settings in the 3CX itself:
- Allow IP PBX to connect a remote phone number;
- Run NAT settings.
By default, 3CX is prohibited from having any third-party connection to IP PBX for safety. Therefore, you need to remove the boxes "do not use outside the local network" and "to block remote users" for the number that will remotely be connected to your PBX.

The 3CX Phone system has a NAT helper. It is very useful when using a conventional unsafe voip router. It enters ports and IP-addresses of telephone, registered remotely, in the memory. This setting is initially set to an IP PBX, but sometimes there are glitches. Therefore it is best to check in advance, or it is set to "1". To do this, you should type ALLOWSOURCEASOUTBOUND in the search. If the settings are correct, the 3CX system will use the ports and addresses of the sources that are registered successfully in the future.
In order to have the IP PBX and a remote softphone or IP-phone cooperating correctly, it is extremely important that the latter support the so-called STUN server. It allows you to define the public address of the subscriber and find out about the availability of ports for receiving/sending traffic. If the phone device does not support STUN, you will have to do additional settings on the router. It is necessary to open ports in the firewall and connect SIP and RTP-ports for all phones, which are located in a remote office. In this case, you must specify both the internal IP-address for each device in the 3CX and public IP-address of the phone configuration. Since all these actions are difficult to do, the STUN service was created to solve the majority of the issues related to the setting up of remote phones.
